Founded in 1888, the Ottawa Humane Society was originally known as the Women's Humane Society and at the time it concerned itself with the welfare of children, the elderly and animals. In 1896, the society took its current name and began concentrating solely on preventing animal cruelty and enforcing animal protection laws. The Children's Aid Society took over the work of caring for abused or neglected children.
In 1933, the Ottawa Humane Society began providing stray animal shelter services to the City of Ottawa, and today the society admits close to 7,000 stray animals every year, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and even pet rats. The society has been operating at its Champagne Avenue South location since 1967.
