Founded in 1888, the Ottawa Humane Society was originally known as the Women's Humane Society and at the time it concerned itself with the welfare of children, the elderly and animals. In 1896, the society took its current name and began concentrating solely on preventing animal cruelty and enforcing animal protection laws. The Children's Aid Society took over the work of caring for abused or neglected children.

In 1933, the Ottawa Humane Society began providing stray animal shelter services to the City of Ottawa, and today the society admits close to 7,000 stray animals every year, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and even pet rats. The society has been operating at its Champagne Avenue South location since 1967.

As of June 23 2011, when we sadly moved to our new site, I have been continuing with my dog walking with honour and commitment. The new site is hell to get to, and there is no dog walking space to speak of. The new site provides a healthier building, but the quaitness is gone. This building will never have the love, spirit, and presence that dear old Champagne had and will always have. Champagne was alive and has a strong psychic presence that will always be felt there. For those, that worked at Champagne, Champagne will live on in our hearts and in our souls. LONG LIVE CHAMPAGNE AS THE REAL OTTAWA HUMANE SOCIETY SINCE 1968!!!!!!

As a Dog Walker at the real Ottawa Humane Society, since Sept 2005, 101 Champagne Ave S was and always will be the true OHS. Champagne was quaint, sweet, homey and had always had an aura of love, faith, hope and joy.
The dogs had a lovely, woodsy, natural, private dog run, where there was always something good to sniff. The OC Train path was a lovely woodsy place to walk the dogs all year. A homey, mature neighbourhood around Champagne always provided a lovely enviroment in which to walk the dogs. I loved Champagne and so did the dogs. I don't care what the public felt, we loved it. It was a good, happy place where love abounded. A good walk was had by all the dogs, that came to Champagne.

This building is now abandoned, the Ottawa Humane Society has moved to a bigger more modern facility.
