Originally known as Dalhousie Community Services (as it operated in the old Dalhousie Ward), the Somerset West Community Health Centre operated from an office situated above the Capital House Tavern on Rochester Street for three years following its opening in 1972. At the time, the centre was staffed by various organizations, including the Children's Aid Society and the Family Service Centre. In 1975, the centre began the first of a series of moves.

By 1993, the centre had found a permanent home in its current, purpose-built location. Today, the centre's client visits number over 40,000 per year and their programs include the Nanny Goat Hill Headstart Nursery School, Street Health Outreach, speech and language therapy and even midwifery services.

Community health centres like Somerset West and others spread across Ottawa are integral to the health of our communities, as they help local residents get the care they need close to home.
