Graffiti is a controversial issue in Ottawa, as it is in many urban centres. For some, the difference between tagging and graffiti art is not well-understood (tagging is simply marking an area with a graffiti writer's personalized signature).

Ottawa has a small but growing number of sanctioned graffiti walls. The Ottawa Tech Wall, located in Piece Park on school board property at Slater Street and Bronson Avenue, has been actively used for over 15 years. The colourful wall certainly attracts attention from passers-by.

Internationally recognized artists such as Juan Carlos Noria, Pat Thompson and John Brownfield started the wall years ago and, like many others, they have used graffiti art as a stepping stone to a more formal art career.

What do you think of graffiti art?
