A map showing the location of James Meakin's Gate Hotel in the Glebe

James Meakin built the Gate Hotel in 1869; it was one of the first buildings to be erected along Bank Street. Hotels like Meakins sprung up on Bank Street to serve travellers, especially Gloucester farmers coming in to market. In 1871, the Turf Hotel opened on Bank Street north of Fifth Avenue near the Mutchmor Trotting Park to serve race aficionados. In 1873, William Powell built the Grove Hotel just across the street from the Gate Hotel.

In 1928, the Ambassador Court Apartments were built on the site of the Gate Hotel. The apartments were designed by well-known Ottawa architect W.E. Noffke.
