You may have seen horse-led carriage or wagon rides in the Byward Market but did you know that there are still horse stables in Lowertown? John Cundell Stables is located along York Street, near Dalhousie.

The current owner, John Cundell, is the third generation of the Cundell family to operate the stables, which began operating in the late 1800s and are now over 115 years old. They are the last private stables in the city's core, legal only because they were there before a bylaw was passed to keep horses out of non-agricultural areas.

In December, watch for the Cundell family's free wagon rides, led by a pair of Belgian draught horses. Is there a better way to enjoy the holiday season in the Byward Market?

This is another one of our heritage that not to many know about, just before Christmas I took my granddaugther on one of those rides what a lovely day we had on the market, while we were on the wagon ,i notice a lot of people did not know anything about the Cundell family ,did know that the horses were kept just down the street, some of the people were from Ottawa,Gatineau, and they all said they come to the market all the time but never knew about that, time that the city promotes more of this beautiful citi!

My friend Marlene & I grew-up in lowertown/Sanyhill area and knew the Cundell family well. Yesterday we were viewing old photos of ourselves on the same paint pony at age 5 yrs. My question is...Did Fred Cundell go door to door with a camera and the pony for family pictures or was that someone else? Beautifuly memories! Signed: "Curious"
