The Rideau Bakery's famous rye bread can be found at grocery stores throughout the city. Over four generations of the Kardish family have contributed to the success of the bakery, which started in a kitchen in Eastern Russia in the early 1900s.

The bakery plays an important role in serving Ottawa's kosher-observant community, and generations of customers have depended on its rye bread, challah, pumpernickel and sweet treats.

In 2007, Ed Kucerak produced a documentary about the Rideau Bakery, which highlights its uncertain future. The generation of the Kardish family now helming the business is torn between wanting to continue the family tradition of producing delicious baked goods, and hoping their kids will follow their own dreams and careers.
